¿Cuáles son los puntos fundamentales a la hora de pensar la producción de su música ¿Cómo piensa el sonido en un disco?
Depende, cada ocasión sonora requiere una forma de pensamiento musical distinta. En Prusia hay un sonido propio de la banda que se busca a sí mismo, cada miembro colabora reinventándolo y buscando una nueva cara de lo mismo. Desde la guitarra mi búsqueda desde el comienzo fue principalmente tímbrica, del sonido del instrumento en sí y rítmica. Eventualmente fue necesario indagar en lo armónico/melódico para completar ese triángulo y que ninguna pata quede mas larga que la otra.
En otros proyectos performáticos-musicales como Los Límites, las Peregrinaciones Nocturnas o la Intromisión la búsqueda es principalmente espacial y quizás cultural de la música, es decir como se comporta la música en determinados espacios ajenos a la producción y presentación musical habitual (bares, salas de ensayo, teatros etc.) por ejemplo, la calle que es lo que se buscó en Peregrinación Nocturna, de qué manera interactúa el sonido con los diferentes paisajes acústicos que ofrece una caminata callejera que a su vez es musicalizada, como reverbera el sonido en una plaza o cómo se escuchan 20 instrumentistas al lado de una dársena de colectivos. A su vez, desde la óptica cultural, de qué manera se configura la música, cómo se termina de construir en el oyente y en el mismo músico estando alejada del escenario que impone una única forma de escucha totalmente direccionada e incluso hasta tiránica.
En cuanto al sonido de un disco, creo que es una idea o búsqueda más de productor musical que de un músico. Supongo que siempre hay una idea del sonido, del cómo va a sonar, pero esa idea es fruto de los temas que componen el disco y no al revés. Quizás la respuesta sea que el sonido se piensa en función de los temas que se van a grabar y no previamente. Por otra parte, los discos son grabados por la banda, o sea nosotros y no sé si tenemos la soltura técnica como para poder elegir libremente entre una sonoridad total de disco y otra, creo que principalmente nos preocupamos por que los temas queden bien grabados con sus arreglos y todo, si eventualmente podemos elegir una integridad sonora del disco, es en función de lo grabado.
¿Cuáles son los inconvenientes más frecuentes que se le presentan?
La creación musical (ya sea la composición, producción de algún disco o arreglo) está plagada de inconvenientes que hay que sortear; desde bloqueos creativos de cómo se debe continuar una música o cómo hacer para resolverla y que llegue a buen término, hasta cuestiones técnicas que no tienen nada que ver con la creación en sí pero sin embargo impiden continuar, como sean desajustes en la organización (en caso de que sea una música hecha de forma grupal) ruptura de instrumentos o de cuerdas, falta de micrófonos para grabar etc. De todas maneras esos inconvenientes deben aislarse y no retrasar el proceso creativo, creo que es importante que una vez que se empezó a construir algo, no hay que detenerse hasta completarlo y en caso de que se presenten dichos obstáculos- o los que fueran, eludirlos, seguir con otra cosa y resolverlos luego.
¿En qué aspectos prefiere lo analógico a lo digital o viceversa?
Quizás lo bueno es ver cómo ambos formatos son igual de interesantes, lo digital tanto el sonido como la imagen son súper maleables pero quizás aún son un reflejo de lo analógico, pero que no pueden igualar su nitidez y calidez. Lo analógico suele incluir el error en el producto final (la quemadura en los rollos fílmicos, las marcas o rayones provocadas por el polvo en las fotografías) que envuelven el material en un halo de imperfección o quizás de imprevisibilidad que lo hacen visual o sonoramente más rico, pero que a su vez es accidental, es un error que se convierte en un plano más. Lo digital quizás sea más puro, pero a su vez es incompleto, suele ser una imitación de lo analógico, un perfeccionamiento o una traslación de un material analógico con determinadas cualidades hacia otro digital con otras, a veces suele haber un desfasaje entre las posibilidades de uno y las de otro. No tiene sentido que lo digital busque ser como lo analógico, el resultado son los filtros vintage de Instagram o las pedales que emulan el sonido analógico, un acercamiento ilusorio e incompleto.
¿Deja pasar un tiempo entre lo grabado y una nueva escucha, por qué? ¿Qué resultados observa en ese momento?
Siempre es necesario distanciarse un poco de lo que se está grabando o de la composición que se está trabajando antes de terminarla. Un lapso que debe ser adecuado para cada música y pensado para ella, si es demasiado largo se puede correr el riesgo de perder el foco de lo que se estaba haciendo, por eso hay que ser cuidadoso, no dejar de pensar en ello, pero tampoco archivarlo y correr el riesgo de olvidar la evolución del trabajo, su camino. Pero sí, es necesario alejarse para ver el panorama a la distancia, tratar de ser imparcial, objetivo y evitar la saturación de escuchar una y otra vez lo mismo. A su vez el distanciarse de lo grabado o compuesto, permite renovar la escucha y ser mejores críticos sobre lo que se está haciendo y en caso de necesitarlo, buscar inspiración o ayuda en otros lados, ya sea en otras músicas o artes que no sean precisamente la que uno está creando.
